Family in the Kitchen

Landlords have been given an extra five months to meet this year’s Healthy Homes requirements. By July 1 this year landlords were meant to include detailed information in their new or renewed tenancy agreements about how their property meets the standards, so all parties were aware of the standards before compliance was required from July 1, 2021.

The healthy homes standards introduce specific and minimum standards for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught stopping in rental properties.

Key Dates:

1 July 2019 was the deadline for all rental properties to have ceiling and underfloor insulation. The Healthy Homes standards also became law, which means all landlords must comply and all rental properties must have ceiling and underfloor insulation. It also means:

  • All private rentals must comply within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1 July 2021, with all private rentals complying by 1 July 2024.

  • All boarding houses must comply by 1 July 2021.

  • While the first compliance date is two years away, there are some things landlords need to do from 1 July 2019:

    • All new or renewed tenancy agreements must include a signed statement that the landlord will comply with the healthy homes standards.

    • Landlords must keep relevant documents as evidence of compliance with the healthy homes standards.
